California Employment Development Department requires that employers report Wage Plan Code information for employees who have their wages and taxes reported on Form DE 6, Quarterly Wage and Withholding Report, when the form is filed electronically.

Who is affected?
You may be affected if you pay employees in the State of California or if you currently have a valid California ? Employer Account Number.
When will the Wage Plan Codes be available in QuickBooks?
QuickBooks 2009 R4 is currently scheduled for release in mid-December 2008. Payroll Update #20901 is also currently scheduled for release in mid-December 2008. You will need both the R4 or higher release and Payroll Update #20901 in order for the codes to be available through Payroll Setup.
What if I am on the Assisted Payroll Service?
There is no change to the tax filing service for Assisted Payroll customers who have California tax returns filed on their behalf. Assisted Payroll customers will now have the ability to enter the Wage Plan Codes for their employees.
What steps should I take after installing QuickBooks 2009 R4 or higher?
- Download and/or install Payroll Update #20901.
- From the Employees menu, select Payroll Setup. Go to Employee Setup and select Employee List. On the Review your Employee list screen, highlight an applicable employee and click Edit. Click Next until you get to the Setup wage plan information screen, select the appropriate Wage Plan Code and then click Finish.
