    Perform a clean uninstall/reinstall in Selective Startup

    Overview

    Third-party applications can interfere with the successful installation of QuickBooks Desktop. As a result, it might be necessary to install QuickBooks Desktop in a special diagnostic mode of Microsoft Windows called Selective Startup.

    Following the steps in this article will primarily have you:

    1. Obtain your QuickBooks Desktop installation CD or .exe file from a download.
    2. Uninstall QuickBooks Desktop
    3. Rename the installation folders
    4. Go into Selective Startup
    5. Install QuickBooks Desktop

    Details

    Back up your company file.

    Obtain the license, product number and file location you will need to reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.

    1. In QuickBooks Desktop, press F2 or CTRL + 1 to open the Product Information window.
    2. Copy down the license number, product number and file location.

    Verify you have your QuickBooks Desktop installation CD or .exe file from a download.

    Locate your QuickBooks Desktop installation CD. If you do not have a QuickBooks Desktop CD follow these links to download your product:

    Uninstall QuickBooks Desktop.

    Close QuickBooks Desktop before uninstalling.

    Windows 8
    1. Open the Start screen (mouse over the bottom left corner).
    2. Right-click on the background and the All Apps icon will appear.
    3. Under the Windows System section, select Control Panel.
    4. Double-click Programs and Features.
    5. In the list of programs, select QuickBooks Desktop and click Uninstall.
    6. Follow the instructions to uninstall QuickBooks Desktop.
    Windows 7
    1. Click the Windows Start button and select Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Programs and Features.
    3. In the list of programs, select QuickBooks Desktop and click Uninstall.
    4. Follow the instructions to uninstall QuickBooks Desktop.
    Note: If you are using QuickBooks Desktop 2007, repeat these steps to also uninstall the QuickBooks Desktop Product Listing service.

    Windows Vista
    1. Click the Windows Start button and select Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Programs and Features.
    3. In the list of programs, select QuickBooks Desktop and click Uninstall/Change.
    4. Follow the instructions to uninstall QuickBooks Desktop.
    Note: If you are using QuickBooks Desktop 2007, repeat these steps to also uninstall the QuickBooks Product Listing service.

    Windows XP
    1. Click the Windows Start button and select Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. In the list of programs, select QuickBooks Desktop and click Remove.
    4. Follow the instructions to remove QuickBooks Desktop.
    Note: If you are using QuickBooks Desktop 2007, repeat these steps to also uninstall the QuickBooks Desktop Product Listing service.

    Important: If QuickBooks Desktop does not appear on the Add/Remove Programs list, you can use the Microsoft Window Install Cleanup Utility tool. We recommend following these steps with your IT support contact.

    Manually rename the QuickBooks Desktop installation folders.

    Right-click on the items below and choose rename.  (Example OLD_QuickBooks)

    Windows 7, 8 or Vista
    • C:\Program Data\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks
    • C:\Program Data\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX (for 64 bit) or C:\Program Files\Intuit\ QuickBooks 20XX (for 32 bit)
    Windows XP or 2000
    • C:\Program Data\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX


    If you cannot find the file, it is possible that this file is hidden. Set the search criteria so that it includes hidden files and folders.

    If the Application Data or Program Data folder is not visible:

    Windows 8
    1. Open the Start screen (mouse over the bottom left corner).
    2. Right-click on the background and the All Apps icon will appear.
    3. Under the Windows System section, select Computer.
    4. In the upper left, click the Organize button.
    5. Select Folder and Search Options.
    6. Click the View tab.
    7. Click Show hidden files and folders.
    8. Click OK.
    Windows 7 or Vista
    1. Click the Start button and select Computer.
    2. In the upper left, click the Organize button.
    3. Select Folder and Search Options.
    4. Click the View tab.
    5. Click Show hidden files and folders.
    6. Click OK.
    Windows XP
    1. Right-click the Start button and choose Explore.
    2. Choose Tools > Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab, and under Advanced Settings, select the Show hidden files and folders checkbox.
    4. Click OK.

    Restart your computer in Selective Startup mode.

    You will not be connected to the Internet in Selective Startup mode.
    1. Open the Run window:
      • Windows 8: Open the Start screen and right-click on the background to All Apps. Under the Windows System section, select Run.
      • Windows 7 or Vista: Click the Windows Start button and select All Programs > Accessories > Run.
      • Windows XP: Click the Windows Start button and select Run.
    2. Enter msconfig in the Open field.
    3. Click the OK button.
    4. Click the General tab
    5. Select the Selective Startup radio button.
    6. Select the Load System Services checkbox.
    7. Clear the Load Startup Items checkbox.
    8. Click the Services tab.
    9. Select the Hide all Microsoft Services checkbox at the bottom of the window.
    10. Click the Disable All button to clear all selected services.
    11. Clear the Hide all Microsoft Services checkbox.
    12. In the Service list, verify the Windows Installer checkbox is selected. If it isn't, select it.
    13. Click OK.
    14. Click the Restart button in the System Configuration window to restart your computer.

    Once your computer has restarted, reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.

    1. Run the QuickBooks Desktop installation from your CD. If you do not have a QuickBooks Desktop CD, you can download QuickBooks Desktop to reinstall.
    2. Have the license number and product number for your version of QuickBooks Desktop ready.
      • For a downloaded product, look in the purchase confirmation email you received from Intuit.
      • If you purchased QuickBooks Desktop on CD, look for the a brightly colored sticker on the original CD envelope.

    3. Insert the QuickBooks Desktop installation CD or download QuickBooks Desktop and launch the QuickBooks setup file.
    4. Begin the installation and follow the onscreen prompts.

      Important: After the installation is complete, follow the steps below to restore your system to its normal configuration.
    5. Open the Run window:
      • Windows 8: Open the Start screen and right-click on the background to All Apps. Under the Windows System section, select Run.
      • Windows 7 or Vista: Click the Windows Start button and select All Programs > Accessories > Run.
      • Windows XP: Click the Windows Start button and select Run.
    6. Enter msconfig in the Open field.
    7. Click the OK button.
    8. Click the General tab.
    9. Select the Normal Startup radio button.
    10. Click OK.
    11. Click the Restart button in the System Configuration window to restart your computer.
