    Change an employee's filing status or allowances (dependents)

    This article explains how to change your employee's filing status or number of allowances.

    Expected Outcome

    You will successfully modify your employee's filing status or number of allowances.

    Assumptions

    Your employee has provided you with a correct Form W-4 or state withholding form.

    Details

    To modify an employee's filing status or number of allowances:

    Choose Employees > Employee Center.

    Double-click the employee name.

    Click the Change Tabs box and select Payroll and Compensation Info (For QuickBooks 2013 and higher versions: Click Payroll Info tab.)

    Click Taxes.

    In Federal tab, Subject to section, click the appropriate boxes.
    Note
    : you can only change Filing Status, Allowances, and Extra Withholding.

    Click the State tab.

    Click the appropriate box for State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) or State Disability Insurance (SDI), or click the State Worked or State Lived drop-down arrow and select the correct state.

    For local taxes, click the Other tab.

    Press the Tab key until the cursor is on the first blank line in the Item Name section.

    Click the drop-down arrow and select the local tax.
    Note:
    If QuickBooks does not match the local tax with the State Worked or State Lived for the employee, a warning message appears after you click OK.

    Some local taxes may require you to enter a tax rate. If you do not know the rate,contact your local tax agency.

    Click OK > OK
