    Calculate Ohio school district tax

    Article ID: 1000158

    Overview

This article explains how to calculate the amount of the Ohio school district tax for subject employees.

QuickBooks supports only the Traditional method for calculating the Ohio school district tax.

    Assumptions

Your employee is subject to the Ohio school district tax in a school district that uses the Traditional method to calculate the tax.

    Expected Outcome

You will accurately calculate the Ohio school district tax for your employee.

    Details

While the Ohio school district tax appears to be a flat rate, it is not. To calculate the withholding, you must know the wage base for the tax, number of exemptions for each employee, and the pay period.

If you have employees that live in an Ohio school district that supports the Traditional method for calculating the Ohio school district tax, do the following:

Go to Employees menu > Employee Center.

    Double-click on an employee.

In the Change tabs dropdown list, select Payroll And Compensation Info.

QuickBooks 2013: Click Payroll Info tab.

    Click Taxes button.

    Go to Others tab.

Add the OH - School District payroll item.

Enter the percentage for the school district in the School District % box

Click the State tab. The number of allowances you enter for the employee affects the calculation of both the state income tax and the Ohio school district tax.

Click the Pay Frequency drop-down arrow and select an interval. This selection also determines which calculation is used.

    New Employee information

The following formula is excerpted from the Ohio Department of Taxation:

Weekly payroll period: Wage base minus $12.50 for each exemption times the School District tax rate

Biweekly payroll period: Wage base minus $25 for each exemption times the School District tax rate

Semimonthly payroll period: Wage base minus $27.08 for each exemption times the School District tax rate

Monthly payroll period: Wage base minus $54.17 for each exemption times the School District tax rate

Annual payroll period: Wage base minus $650 for each exemption times the School District tax rate
