Overview

This article explains how to activate the payroll service in QuickBooks.

Assumptions

You have purchased a QuickBooks Payroll subscription.

Expected Outcome

You can activate your QuickBooks Payroll subscription.

Details

  • Auto-renewal - your payroll service is a subscription that renews automatically, and your credit card or bank account will be automatically debited at the start of each subscription term.
  • Cancel - you may cancel your payroll subscription at any time by calling 800.624.2106.

To activate a QuickBooks payroll subscription in QuickBooks Pro and Premier:

  1. From the top menu bar, choose Employees > Payroll> Enter Service Key.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter the service key, and then click Yes.
  4. Click Finish. QuickBooks will download the latest tax table and verify the payroll subscription.

To activate a QuickBooks payroll subscription in QuickBooks Simple Start:

  1. On the Home page, go to Money Out, and choose Pay Employees.
  2. Select Enter Service Key.
  3. Click Add Service Key > Next.
  4. Click Finish. QuickBooks downloads the latest tax table and verifies the payroll subscription.

If you don't have your service key, use our automated service key/disk delivery key retrieval tool to get it:

  1. Access the Automated Service Key/Disk Delivery Key Tool.
  2. Enter your Federal EIN in the first field.
  3. Enter your Payroll Order # in the second field. This number was probably emailed to you and is usually formatted like SBL######## or QST########.
    • If you don't have your Payroll Order #, mark the I don't my order number box and enter the business telephone number.
      Note: The business telephone number must match what Intuit has on file.
  4. Click the Get Service Key button.
Note: The Automated Service Key/Disk Delivery Key Tool may not work if there are multiple payroll orders in our system for your company. If you are unable to retrieve your service key using this tool, contact us at 800-624-2106.
