Edit or remove a payroll service in QuickBooks

This article explains how to edit or remove a payroll service key from a QuickBooks company file.
Assumptions
You must have a current payroll subscription in QuickBooks.
Expected Outcome
You can edit or remove a payroll subscription from QuickBooks.
Details
If you have either Direct Deposit or the Assisted Payroll service, do not perform this procedure. You will not be able to transmit payroll data. Please contact QuickBooks Payroll Service at 888.712.9702 for Assisted Technical Support or 800.624.2106 for DIY Direct Deposit support.
To edit or remove a payroll service key:
Open the Service Keys window.
- For QuickBooks Pro and Premier: from the Employees menu, choose My Payroll Service > Manage Service Key.
- For Simple Start: choose Payroll > My Payroll Service > Manage Service Key.
Click View to know and note your current service key in QuickBooks. Click OK when done.
Click Edit.
In the Enter Service Key window, delete the existing service key, and then enter a new service key.
Click Next > Finish.
If the previous steps do not allow you to enter the new service key, please follow these steps.
To remove a payroll service key:
Back up the company file.
See Back up the QuickBooks company file for more information.
Open the QuickBooks Service Keys window.
- For QuickBooks Pro and Premier: from the Employees menu, choose My Payroll Service Manage Service Key.
- For Simple Start: choose Payroll > My Payroll Service > Manage Service Key.
Click Remove or press ALT + 0, then click Yes to the next two messages.
If you have either Direct Deposit or the Assisted Payroll service, do not perform this procedure. You will not be able to transmit payroll data. Please contact QuickBooks Payroll Service at 888.712.9702 for Assisted Technical Support or 800.624.2106 for DIY Direct Deposit support.
